Joss Mountain family hike

NOTE: We are hiking the Northwest Trail up Joss Mountain, not the Joss Pass trail (east access to Joss Mtn). These instructions will get you to the correct trail head.

Meet at the turn off of Highway 1 onto Three Valley - Mabel Forest Service Road at 10:00 AM to convoy up to the trail head. This is a right hand turn (south) off off the TCH just before Three Valley Gap and right at the beginning of an eastbound passing lane (watch for it, it’s easy to miss). From here it is 16 km on logging road to the trail head. The road is steep at times but recent reports are that it’s in good shape.

From the TCH junction, it is 6 km south on the Three Valley - Mabel FSR to a left hand turn onto Branch 5 where we leave valley bottom and start climbing. Don’t take the earlier turn at 4.3 km, this will take you to the east access - the Joss Pass trail head. At 6-7 km on Branch 5 stay left (keep climbing). Generally continue climbing at each fork. Trail head at 10 km.

Bring enough water for the day, there are no creek crossings once we start hiking.
